Which watch should you choose for the sauna? We are looking for models with extreme durability!
Although many people think that a watch in the sauna is a trifle that will withstand everything, reality is completely different – extreme heat, moisture, and sudden temperature changes can destroy even the best equipment. A watch for the pool and for the sauna are two different categories – the former handles water but not air at 90°C. In the sauna, even G-Shock watches, known for their durability, fail, and most manufacturers explicitly advise against using them in such conditions. In this article, you'll check why ordinary watches aren't suitable for the sauna, which models are really designed for extreme heat, and how to avoid damage that appears only over time – welcome!
Watch in the sauna? Check why even your G-Shock might not survive it
It seems that a G-Shock watch for the sauna is an ideal idea – after all, it's a symbol of durability, water resistance, and shock resistance. However, in practice, even the most solid model can give up in confrontation with extreme heat and moisture. In the sauna, temperature can reach 90-100°C, while most watches, even those considered "indestructible," have their limits at around 50-60°C. It's not just about high temperature – the combination of hot air, humidity, and sudden temperature changes affects electronics, battery, and seals like an endurance test that no standard model passes without losses.
It's precisely thermal shock that's responsible for most damage – air inside the watch expands, condenses, and causes moisture to appear under the glass. Additionally, rubber sealing elements lose elasticity under heat, and metal cases heat up very quickly. So if you're tempted to enter the sauna with your favorite G-Shock, you better think twice. Even if the watch seemingly survives a few sessions, hidden damage may only become apparent after months – when the battery starts swelling, hands stop working, and moisture marks appear on the dial.
Casio G-Shock Classic DW-5600RL-1ER is an iconic model that combines indestructibility, functionality, and timeless design. It features a durable case with classic rectangular shape and digital display with Illuminator backlight, guaranteeing excellent readability in all conditions. The watch is water-resistant to 200m, shock and impact resistant, and thanks to functions such as stopwatch, alarm, and automatic calendar, it's perfect for everyday use and sports activities.
Manufacturers explicitly state that a watch for the sauna is not the same as a waterproof watch. Although many models handle the pool without problems, in an environment above 70°C things happen to them that aren't immediately visible. So if you care about durability and want to avoid losing warranty, leave your watch in the locker before entering the sauna. It's really a better solution than costly repair or device replacement.
Will waterproof diving watches withstand the sauna?
Many people assume that since men's diving watches can withstand enormous pressure underwater, they'll equally well handle a hot sauna. Unfortunately, this is a wrong assumption. No standard watch is dedicated to wearing in sauna conditions – manufacturers don't test them at temperatures exceeding 60°C, and that's exactly how much (or even more) the interior of a traditional Finnish sauna reaches. Even models with 5 ATM water resistance or 10 ATM, which can be taken into the shower or pool without problems, aren't able to resist the combination of extreme temperature and moisture.
The situation is similar with professional watches such as Luminox watches, designed for divers and special forces. Although they have solid cases, resistant glass, high water resistance class, and work phenomenally during diving – they're not adapted to exposure to hot, humid air. High temperature accelerates material aging and can lead to unsealing, while sudden cooling after leaving the sauna increases the risk of micro-cracks. In other words – even if a diving watch withstands a few minutes in the sauna, no manufacturer will guarantee it will remain fully functional after such an experiment. With one exception, which we'll discuss later in the article.
Luminox Pacific Diver Chronograph "Snake Year" Limited Edition XS.3141.BO.SNAK.N is an exceptional watch from a limited edition, created for lovers of expressive style and extreme functionality. Its completely black construction with gold details symbolizes strength and precision, while the chronograph, date display, and water resistance to 200m make it ready for any challenge.
Casio SAN-100H – the only watch that really withstands the sauna (and has proof)
In a world where most watches capitulated at 60°C, Casio decided to do something completely different. Casio SAN-100H is the first sauna watch designed specifically for extreme conditions – and this isn't an empty marketing slogan. This model passed tests at temperatures reaching 100°C, and its case is made of low moisture permeability material that doesn't heat up like metal and doesn't cause skin discomfort. It's precisely this construction that distinguishes it from every other model, including G-Shock watches.
Casio introduced several intelligent solutions to the SAN-100H that make it exceptional. Timer set to 12 minutes – the optimal time for one sauna session – helps control your stay without needing to look at your phone. Luminescent hands ensure readability even in fog and steam, and special anti-condensation coating protects the dial from fogging. The whole is lightweight, comfortable, and without metal elements touching the skin, eliminating burn risk. However, this isn't a mass product – Casio SAN-100H can only be purchased in Japan, often through a lottery system. This exclusivity only adds to its character. In practice, it's the only sauna watch that actually makes sense and works as it should.
Orient Sports Diver Ray II Automatic 41mm TAA02005D9 is an iconic watch for men who value reliability, sporty style, and Japanese precision. Equipped with automatic movement, stainless steel case and bracelet, and blue dial with rotating bezel, it works perfectly both in everyday use and during diving.
So it's not worth risking and taking your watch into the sauna – even the most durable model can be damaged by heat and moisture. In most saunas, you'll already find time measurement in the form of a sand hourglass, which safely marks the length of one session. You can also simply follow your body's feelings or use a clock placed outside the cabin. However, if you care about a solid watch that will withstand other extreme conditions – visit the WestWatches online watch store, where you'll find models created with durability, resistance, and active lifestyle in mind, although unfortunately none of them will be a suitable choice for the sauna.

The hairspring – how does this tiny component, which determines a watch’s accuracy, work?
The hairspring is a tiny but vital component of a mechanical watch which, together with the balance wheel, is responsible for keeping accurate time. Its performance determines whether the watch maintains consistent accuracy, or whether it starts to run fast or slow. The NH36 and 4R36 movements – a comparison of Seiko calibres
If you’re wondering whether the NH36 and 4R36 are two different movements, the answer is simple: technically, they are virtually identical. The difference usually lies not in the design, but in the designation, branding and distribution channel. The Seiko 4R36 is used in Seiko watches, whilst the Seiko NH36 or NH36A is usually found in microbrand watches, modder projects and models from third-party manufacturers. For the user, this means one thing: if you’re looking at a watch with this calibre, assess first and foremost the condition of the movement, the quality of the assembly, the case, serviceability and actual performance, rather than the letter in the name itself.
The NH35 movement – everything you need to know about this popular calibre in automatic watches
The NH35 movement is a popular automatic movement used in sports watches, everyday watches and microbrand watches. It is valued for its simple design, the wide availability of spare parts, and practical features such as automatic winding, manual winding, a stop-second function and a date display. Find out what makes the NH35 calibre stand out and whether a watch with this movement would be a good choice for everyday wear.
How to open a watch without scratches or stress? A simple guide for beginners
Do you want to replace the battery or find out how to open a watch without damaging the case? Start by identifying the type of case back, as a push-in model opens differently from a screw-down model, and a watch with screws opens in yet another way. The most important things are gentle movements, a soft surface and not forcing the case. If the watch is expensive, water-resistant, a sports watch or holds great sentimental value for you, it’s safer to take it to a watchmaker.
